On this show:
0:08 – The largest, least-regulated drug trade in the United States – one that you are probably participating in this morning – the caffeine industry. Murray Carpenter has devoted an entire book to a substance that also provided much of the stamina needed to write it: it’s called Caffeinated: How Our Daily Habit Helps, Hurts, and Hooks Us.
0:34 – Governor Gavin Newsom filed a lawsuit after his legal team made an error that will cause him not to be listed as a Democrat on the ballot — and a judge has just ruled that “Democrat” cannot now appear next to his name. We talk about the court case and other updates in the looming gubernatorial recall with Laurel Rosenhall (@LaurelRosenhall), who covers politics and power in the state capitol for CalMatters.
0:40 – Follow the money behind the effort to recall San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin, and you’ll find GOP donors, real estate wealth and tech cash. Tim Redmond joins us — he’s been a political and investigative reporter in San Francisco for more than 30 years and is the founder and editor of 48hills.org.
1:08 – Arturo Lopez Levy is assistant professor of Politics and International Relations at Holy Names University and once a political analyst for the Cuban government. He joins us to discuss the protests in Cuba and the current Cuban government.
1:34 – California’s Assembly Health Committee is expected to vote today on SB 519, Sen. Scott Wiener’s bill to decriminalize psychedelics for adults 21 and older, including psilocybin mushrooms, DMT, LSD and MDMA. But advocates say the bill has been watered down by critics in a backroom deal and would now limit the amount of plants and fungi that individuals can possess — so they’re asking for it to be delayed until next session.
We talk with two guests:
- Carlos Plazola is board chair of Decriminalize Nature (@DecrimNature), an educational campaign based in Oakland aiming to inform individuals about the value of entheogenic psychoactive plants and fungi.
- Solana Booth is enrolled into the Nooksack Nation of the Chief Dan George Family and Mohawk from Bay Quinte where the peacekeeper was born, White Owl House of the Wolf Clan. She is a Pacific Northwest Traditional Medicine Keeper who promotes Native American and Alaska Native life ways and traditional teachings.
